The Burro Jim Motel in Aguila, Arizona had been operating for nearly 50 years when I happened upon it in 1986. The burro's ears wriggle and his tail flicks back and forth.

Hard times had caused the motel's owners to fill in their swimming pool, but they kept their burro working.
